ClusterVision Machines Rank High on TOP500 List of Supercomputers

ClusterVision, specialist in high performance compute, storage and database clusters, has been listed three times on the prestigious TOP500 list of fastest supercomputers in the world (top500.org). All three entries appear in the top quarter of the list, an achievement that only one other European company can claim. World-wide, there is only one other privately-held company with three or more entries this high on the list. The three entries are:
  1. Position 66 - The University of Bristol (3360 processor cores, 37.6 TFLOPs peak performance)
  2. Position 99 - University College London (1992 processor cores, 24.4 TFLOPs peak performance)
  3. Position 112 - The University of Cambridge (2340 processor cores, 28.1 TFLOPs peak performance)
The University of Bristol received its 37 TFLOPs supercomputer facility very recently and is listed in the TOP500 for the first time. The central facility named "BlueCrystal" was opened on the 1st of May and is one of the fastest in the UK. It was built using IBM servers, ClearSpeed accelerator cards, QLogic InfiniPath interconnect and DataDirect Networks storage. Dr Ian Stewart, Director of the University's Advanced Computing Research Centre, said: "ClusterVision managed the interactions between many suppliers and assisted with the machine room design. ClusterVision's flexibility and efficient deployment allowed me to have a far more capable service within budget and within our schedule."

The Supercomputer at University College London also features on the TOP500 for the first time. It was built in close collaboration with Dell and features many hundreds of Dell PowerEdge servers, InfiniBand interconnect and DataDirect Networks storage.

The University of Cambridge supercomputer was also built in close collaboration with Dell and entered the TOP500 in November 2006 at position 20. It features on the list for the fourth time.

Dr ir Matthijs van Leeuwen, Sales Director at ClusterVision, commented: "We are very proud to have three entries so high on the prestigious TOP500 list. This kind of recognition demonstrates the technical and commercial aptitude of our design and implementation teams who worked hard in close collaboration with our customers and many partners, in particular Dell and IBM, to build these powerful machines. ClusterVision continues to grow and expand across Europe and we expect to achieve double the number of TOP500 entries in the next issue, including supercomputers in Italy, Belgium and Germany."
